State Park Sundays

 State Park Sundays

And Other Maine Exploration Adventures

Sundays are for glorifying God and so we always attend Mass.  But then after church, it is family time and one of our family favorites is hiking.  It’s great to get out in nature and see God’s glory in the beauty of our Maine mountains and waters.

Hiking in Maine is like this impossible to do list.  There are so many great places to go and so many trails at each of these places… it is a little overwhelming.  My husband, Justin came up with the perfect solution to keep us trying our new locations and seeing new sights… you want to know what it is right?

Here it is; the best birthday present ever. This is a big map of Maine framed on cork board.  We have a list of all the state parks on the bottom right and little flags to pin in where we’ve gone. We have been to more places than is showing here but we are starting from when we set up the map.  We can then number the flags and correspond them with a scrapbook we are planning!

This was a slippery and tricky hike for Boomer, but he made it!  The trail has you cross the river 5 times.  Angel Falls in Township D on 7/25/2021.  Find the details to visit on Maine trail finder!  I recommend writing out directions because you will lose service.  You take “The Bemis”, a logging road, to a little gravel pit parking area.

We also stopped in Roxbury, Maine at “The height of land” the only spot with cell coverage for miles.  There is a beautiful view and from this high up, it seems you are closer to the clouds.

On the way home, we stopped at Mount Blue state park for a little swim.  Also part of Mount Blue state park, is Tumbledown Mountain.  We did hike Tumbledown a month earlier.  Check it out below.  On our way home we also saw a little black bear cub run across the road in front of our van.  Check out the video using this link to my Pinterest video Baby black bear.

Tumbledown was a great hike, but tough on the five year old.  We were glad we didn’t bring our youngest or the dog Boomer.  It is not a hike for four footed friends.

There is a lovely lake for swimming at the top.

We went with a big group of Catholics from St. Rose of Lima in Jay to Prince of Peace in Lewiston.  We celebrated mass on the mountain; a first for me. I think Acadia took this wonderful picture.

This is what I have to share so far.  I’ll update the rest of this summer’s hikes here on this post.  So visit again if you’re interested in Maine’s natural beauty and hiking to see it.

All About Goat

 All About Goat

And her duck and chicken friends

Okay, so my title is misleading because we didn’t suddenly get a GOAT on our farm. We do however have a lovely little new Indian Runner duck named goat.  We adopted her from another farming family who did not want to send this beautiful little duck for processing with the other meat birds they had. We are very happy that they decided to re-home her and that we were able to take her onto our homestead.

It was cute as the animals in the duck coop tried to decide if she was going to be with the ducks or if she was going to be with the chickens. She looks so much different than the other ducks that I think it took a little time for them to recognize her as a fellow duck.

She came with a name goat because of two little markings on the top of her head when she was little. We have started calling her by the nickname Goaty but sometimes just Goat especially to trick visiting friends or family that we have a new animal on our farm until they actually see her.

The chickens that share this coop with these ducks are Sulkies, that means they are a mix between the Silky chicken and Sultan chickens. One of these little girls whose name is Inky has been very broody and now she is sitting on two chicken eggs and one duck egg.  This process takes 21 days.. We have not completely been keeping track of the days but it has definitely been more than two weeks.  We have a rooster named Cameron and a drake, which is  a male duck, named Eggbert.  We expect that the eggs are fertilized.

So we are very excited to show you a baby chick peeking out from underneath her wings very soon. We will keep you posted as soon as we find one!
